Summer Hikes


Sunapee Region Greenway offers eight guided summer hikes

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The 2010 Summer Hike Schedule has been announced by the Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway Coalition.

Eight hikes throughout the region will offer a variety of difficulty and distance. The schedule kicks off with a 6-mile trek up the challenging Bulkhead Trail on Ragged Mountain. Other hikes include a clearing and reblazing effort on Mount Kearsarge’s Lincoln Trail and an easier hike to Clark Pond and Clark’s Lookout in New London.An innovation this year is a family hike intended to appeal to parents and their youngsters. The route will be on Bog Mountain in Wilmot and will cover about two miles, depending on the group.

The schedule:

Saturday, June 19: Trek the east side of Ragged Mountain, up the Bulkhead Trail. Difficult, 6 miles. Lee Carvalho, 735-5719.

Saturday, June 26: Bye-Bye to Black Fly Hike to Aaron’s Ledge in Springfield. Moderate, steep; 3 miles. Susan and Michael Chiarella, 763-4661.

Saturday, July 10: Summit Bog Mountain, with its stunning views of surrounding mountains. 3.5 miles, moderate. Brian Faughnan, 526-7838.

Saturday, July 17: Dig into N.H. Trails Day with Gerry Gold clearing and reblazing on Mt. Kearsarge’s Lincoln Trail. 7 miles, moderate. 526-2857.

Saturday, July 24: Bushwhack the old King Hill ski area in Sutton. 4.5 miles, moderate. Art Robbins, 927-4377.

Saturday, August 14: The Clark and Clark’s Expedition, a hike to both Clark Pond and Clark’s Lookout in New London. 3 miles, easy. Ralph Spofford, 526-6568.

Sunday, August 15: Tour historic Old Province Road, finishing up in South Sutton at the Old Home Day celebration. 3 miles, easy. Art Robbins, 927-4377.

Saturday, August 21: Bog Mountain for families. Bring your youngsters for this casual walk. 2 miles, easy. Andy Hager, 526-2846.
